Your Guide to Fall Fun in South Central Wisconsin

There's just something about fall in Wisconsin. The leaves start changing, the air gets a little cooler, apple cider donuts suddenly become a food group, and our small towns and communities come alive with festivals, pumpkin patches, and all of those cozy fall traditions we wait all year for.

Whether you've lived here your whole life, recently moved to the area, or are thinking about making South Central Wisconsin home, here are some of my favorite ways to enjoy the season, from Madison and Evansville to New Glarus, Janesville, and beyond.

๐ŸŽ Spend an Afternoon at an Apple Orchard

You really can't do a Wisconsin fall without at least one orchard trip.

Around the Madison area, there are plenty of options for apple picking, cider, donuts, and an excuse to spend a crisp fall afternoon outside.

Door Creek Orchard is a family-run orchard just outside Madison with a focus on sustainably grown and heirloom apples. It's a great option if you're looking for a more relaxed, traditional orchard experience.

Alpine Ridge Orchard is another fall favorite, with U-pick options, beautiful country views, and their famous apple cider donuts. And yes, the donuts alone are a perfectly acceptable reason to go.

If you're up for a little drive through the rolling countryside, Oakwood Fruit Farm near Richland Center is another classic Wisconsin fall destination known for apples, cider, and, you guessed it, more apple cider donuts.

My fall rule: If there's a cider donut available, you're getting the cider donut.

๐ŸŽƒ Find Your Perfect Pumpkin

Pumpkin patches are definitely not just for kids.

For a full fall-day experience, Schuster's Farm in Deerfield has pumpkins, a corn maze, farm activities, seasonal treats, and plenty to do during the day. Once the sun goes down, they also offer nighttime fall activities for anyone who prefers their October activities a little spookier.

Closer to Madison, Warm Belly Farm in Cottage Grove offers a pumpkin patch, corn maze, sunflower and flower fields, fall treats, and plenty of cute photo opportunities.

If you want something a little simpler, Anderson's Pleasant Patch Pumpkins in Cottage Grove is a great old-fashioned pumpkin patch stop with pumpkins, gourds, and fall dรฉcor.

Grab a pumpkin for the porch, take approximately 75 photos, and call it a successful Wisconsin fall afternoon.

๐Ÿ Chase the Fall Colors

One of the best parts about living in Wisconsin is that you really don't have to go far to see incredible fall color.

Devil's Lake State Park

If you're willing to make the drive north of Madison, Devil's Lake State Park is hard to beat.

The park has 29 miles of hiking trails ranging from easy lakeside walks to much more challenging bluff hikes. The combination of the lake, quartzite bluffs, and fall foliage makes this one of my favorite Wisconsin day-trip ideas.

Fall color timing changes every year depending on the weather, so don't rely too heavily on a specific "peak" weekend. Check Wisconsin's Fall Color Report before heading out.

Blue Mound State Park

For another gorgeous option west of Madison, head to Blue Mound State Park.

The park has several hiking trails through hardwood forests, and late September into October brings beautiful yellows and deep reds throughout the park.

Pack some coffee, bring a sweatshirt, and make a morning of it.

๐Ÿบ Experience Oktoberfest in New Glarus

If you haven't spent a fall weekend in New Glarus, add this one to your list.

New Glarus Oktoberfest runs September 24 through 27, 2026 in downtown New Glarus.

Expect craft beer, live music, Swiss and German food, wagon rides, and plenty of small-town Wisconsin charm. Admission is free, making it an easy day trip from Madison, Evansville, or Janesville.

Even outside Oktoberfest weekend, New Glarus is one of my favorite places for a fall drive. The rolling hills around town are beautiful once the leaves start changing.

๐Ÿ‚ Explore a Small-Town Fall Festival

One thing South Central Wisconsin does exceptionally well is small-town festivals.

There are several worth putting on your 2026 calendar:

Wauktoberfest | September 11 to 13
Head to Waunakee for live entertainment, food, fall activities, tractor rides, pumpkin decorating, and more.

Sugar River Fire & Smoke BBQ Festival | September 19 to 20
Historic Paoli hosts a weekend of BBQ and live music at Seven Acre Dairy Co. Paoli is already adorable on a normal day, so add fall weather and BBQ and I'm sold.

New Glarus Oktoberfest | September 24 to 27
One of the quintessential South Central Wisconsin fall weekends.

Verona Fall Fest | September 25
Bonfires, hayrides, a petting zoo, and other family-friendly fall activities.

Monona Chili Cook-Off | September 26
The 43rd annual Chili Cook-Off brings together everything from traditional recipes to creative new takes.

Mount Horeb Fall Village Market | October 3 to 4
Spend the weekend exploring downtown Mount Horeb with local makers, food trucks, and live music.

โ˜• Make Your Own Cozy Fall Day

Not every fall weekend needs an itinerary.

Honestly, some of the best fall days around here are the simple ones.

Start with coffee at a local shop. Take the back roads instead of the highway. Stop at a roadside farm stand. Walk through one of our downtowns. Find a supper club for dinner. Go home, light a candle, and pretend winter isn't coming.

Some of my favorite communities for a casual fall day trip include New Glarus, Mount Horeb, Stoughton, Paoli, and downtown Madison.

And don't overlook the smaller communities. Living in Evansville has made me appreciate how much there is to explore between Madison and Janesville. Sometimes the best Wisconsin days are the ones where you don't have much of a plan at all.

๐Ÿ‘ป Add Something Spooky

October wouldn't be complete without at least a little Halloween fun.

Many of our local farms transition from wholesome daytime pumpkin patch activities to nighttime attractions once October arrives. Schuster's Farm in Deerfield is one option if you're looking for a haunted experience.

Madison also has ghost tours, haunted attractions, and Halloween events throughout October, so there are options whether your preferred level of spooky is "cute pumpkin sweater" or "I would like to be genuinely terrified."

I personally lean toward the cute pumpkin sweater end of that spectrum.

๐Ÿš— My Perfect South Central Wisconsin Fall Day

If I were planning the ultimate fall Saturday, it would look something like this:

Coffee first, obviously.

Then I'd take the scenic back roads to an orchard or pumpkin patch, get some cider donuts, and spend a couple of hours outside.

From there, I'd head toward New Glarus, Mount Horeb, or Paoli to walk around downtown, browse some local shops, and grab dinner somewhere cozy.

Then home before it gets too cold because, as Wisconsinites, we all know the beautiful 65-degree fall days don't stick around nearly long enough.

๐Ÿก Fall Is One of My Favorite Times to Call Wisconsin Home

I grew up throughout Wisconsin before eventually planting roots in Evansville, and fall is one of those seasons that reminds me why I love living here.

South Central Wisconsin gives you a little bit of everything. You can spend the morning in downtown Madison, be hiking through the woods that afternoon, and end the day in a small town surrounded by rolling farmland.

That's something I love helping my real estate clients discover, too.

Finding the right home isn't only about bedrooms, bathrooms, and square footage. The community you choose becomes part of your everyday life. It's the coffee shop you stop at on Saturday morning, the trail you walk after work, the festivals you look forward to every year, and the traditions you eventually make your own.

Whether you're already lucky enough to call Wisconsin home or you're considering a move somewhere around Madison, Evansville, Janesville, or the surrounding communities, I hope you get out and enjoy a little bit of what makes fall here so special.

Happy fall! ๐Ÿ‚
